October 2024 Artist Spotlight: Lance Behringer

I don’t recall exactly when I came across Lance Behringer and his artwork. I do remember that it was in a local Facebook group, and he had just completed a large mural. This was right around the time that our community was really getting in to creating murals around our downtown buildings and I started following Lance to see more of his art. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Not only are Lance’s talents used to create stunning works of art on buildings around our county, but he also creates beautiful commission pieces A mixture of portraits, animals, and K9 companions adorn the walls of his clients.

Lance is a local artist in Melbourne, Florida who embraces his passion for art and law enforcement. Between the ages of 13 and 14, Lance already knew that he wanted to pursue a career in both art and law enforcement. Browsing through his social media, you can truly see that love and passion shining through. Although Lance had spent most of his childhood and teenage years drawing, it wasn’t until high school that he started painting. Without any formal training, Lance has taken his self-taught skills and achieved success on every item he creates. Outside of creating and painting, Lance enjoys fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Taking his influences from Guy Harvey and Chip Foose, many of Lance’s subjects are wildlife, fish, and cars. His ability to capture the way in which a fish swims through the water and the directional composition of light hitting each subject takes you into the painting and immerses you in the setting. His ability to capture the essence of each car in his murals is amazing. But that’s just where it starts!

When I look at Lance’s portfolio, the items that touch my heart are the in-memoriam commissions. I’ve lost some pets that have crossed the rainbow bridge that were near and dear to my heart. Just recently, Hurricane Helene brought torrential rains to parts of the Appalachian Mountains causing significant damage. One of those places hardest hit was Chimney Rock, North Carolina. A special location there was the rainbow bridge where pet owners took their pets collars and attached them to the bridge. That bridge is gone. Seeing the portraits that Lance creates of these loved family members brings about a sense of emotion that is a mixture of sadness and joy. But in every single painting, Lance brings these families peace. The rainbow bridge is a special place, and Lance’s talents are truly one of a kind in providing these families a lasting reminder of their love for their furry friends.

Although Lance enjoys painting the canvases his clients commission, he prefers painting murals because of the larger scale. His most recent mural that he completed at Central Middle School is his favorite so far! He has painted murals at schools, police stations, client’s homes, and various locations around the community and beyond our county. If you have a wall, Lance can paint on it!

Lance’s advice for up-and-coming artists or those with a passion for art that want to pursue it when they grow up, follow your heart and keep drawing. In school, Lance was always told to pay attention in class and to stop drawing. He was told he would never get anywhere in art. I think I can speak for us all, Lance, you’ve made it!
